Nine Elon Athletes Named Academic All-Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon University has landed nine student-athletes on the 2005-06 TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference team for winter sports as announced by the Southern Conference office.

The squad consists of student-athletes in the sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track, women’s indoor track and wrestling. To qualify for a spot on the squad, an athlete – of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her institution – must have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team’s contests this fall while forging a 3.20 or better cumulative grade-point average.

This is the fourth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The All-Academic squads are made possible by a grant from the SoCon’s Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.

The Phoenix women’s indoor track team placed seven athletes on the team – Senior English major Alana Black (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), junior political science major Angela Carlberg (Baltic, S.D./Washington), sophomore psychology and history double major Katelyn Ealer (Bear, Del./Middletown), sophomore chemistry major Grace Ilevbare (Ibadan, Oyo, Nigeria), sophomore undecided major Julie McGowan (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), sophomore exercise/sport science major Jenny Pearce (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and junior exercise/sport science major Amy Sulser (Natick, Mass./Natick).

Junior exercise/sport science major Chris Chalko (South Bend, Ind./Marian), a senior academically, represents Elon’s Southern Conference North Division championship men’s basketball team on the squad. Sophomore leisure/sport management major Katie Whidden (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) represents the Phoenix women’s basketball squad on the team.
