Phoenix Preseason Football Practice Update #9

“We’re at the point in camp where some of our players are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack,” said Elon coach Pete Lembo. “With each practice, coaches are getting a better feel for players’ strengths and weaknesses.”

The special team units worked on field goals, punt protection and punt return technique. During the final team period, the offense and the defense focused on the two-minute drill.

“We came out in uppers this morning,” said Lembo. “That was so this practice session could have more of a pass emphasis in the team periods and be a little lighter on the kids’ legs.”

Red-shirt freshman wide receiver Terrell Hudgins and junior defensive back Chris Bland each turned in a much more consistent practice.

Hudgins finished a lot of plays while Bland snagged a pair of interceptions – one during the pass skeleton segment and one during the final team period.

“(Former cornerback) Daronce Daniels (a sophomore) has been taking reps at safety,” said Lembo. “He has looked comfortable at that new position.”

Elon returns to the Hunt and Tucker Fields for a 7:30 p.m. session Monday – just the second-ever practice under the new lights of Hunt Field.

All practice sessions are open to the public. Please contact the Phoenix Sports Information Office at (336) 278-6711 to check on possible schedule changes.
