“Overall, we had a good practice out here tonight. I thought the energy level was good, there was a good amount of intensity on the field, but at the same time we had too many penalties,” said head coach Pete Lembo. “I had hoped going from our first scrimmage to our second that we might be able to cut back in that area but there were still too many yellow flags on the field. We’ve got to be more disciplined and we’ve got to be more focused in order to beat a top-25 team next week.”
The team periods of the practice featured a move the ball scrimmage, an overtime scrimmage and a two-minute drill. The Phoenix also mixed in various special team situations throughout the practice.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Daniel had a key interception to stop an offensive drive during the scrimmage while sophomore linebacker Corey Weaver turned in a top performance for the night.
“I thought Corey had another good night running to the football. He has really had a very steady and productive preseason,” commented Lembo.
On the offensive side of the ball, Elon’s top four wide receivers – sophomore Bo Williamson, senior Michael Mayers, sophomore Johnnie Blackwell and redshirt freshman Terrell Hudgins – all put in solid performances during the session.
“We’re looking forward to closely evaluating the video and beginning to solidify our lineups as we transition from a preseason mode to a game-week mode in the next couple days,” said Lembo. “We must identify our most reliable and trustworthy guys and put them in position to be successful next week.”
The Phoenix will next hit the practice fields at 2:00 p.m. Friday. All practice sessions are open to the public. Please contact the Elon Sports Information Office at (336) 278-6711 to check on possible schedule changes.
