Richardson Propels No. 2 Appalachian Past Elon

The defending Southern Conference and NCAA-IAA champion Mountaineers (4-1 overall, 1-0 SoCon) used four consecutive touchdowns to blow open a slim 10-7 edge deep in the second quarter. With his Phoenix (2-2, 0-1) trailing 10-0, Andrew Wilcox attempted a 40-yard field goal with 3:15 left in the opening period, but his kick fell wide to the left.

“Certainly, we are disappointed to lose the game,” Elon coach Pete Lembo said. “We played a very good football team today. As we build our program, we do not want our players to ever accept losing.”

Richardson put Appalachian State on the scoreboard first at 7-0 with 12:12 to play in the opening quarter when his one-yard touchdown run capped a four-play, 50-yard drive that took just 1:03 off the clock.

Julian Rauch extended the Mountaineers' advantage to 10-0 on a 22-yard field goal with 7:18 remaining in the first period, concluding an eight-play, 42-yard drive that consumed 3:26.

Chris Bland crossed the goal line with a 33-yard interception run to pull Elon within 10-7 with 9:42 to go in the second stanza. Bland's interception was the first one returned for a touchdown by an Appalachian State opponent in two seasons.

A string of three second-quarter touchdowns – a five-yard run by Armanti Edwards, a 28-yard interception return by Jerome Touchstone and a 19-yard pass from Edwards to Richardson – gave the Mountaineers a 31-7 halftime lead.

Richardson scored his third touchdown of the contest on a 10-yard run with 12:03 left to play in the third period, finishing a 10-play, 70-yard drive to push the ASU advantage to 38-7. Terrell Hudgins hauled in a 43-yard touchdown toss from Wes Pope to cut that deficit to 38-14 with 9:02 to go in the third quarter.

The Mountaineers posted one final touchdown when Trey Elder completed a 50-yard pass play to William Mayfield with 50 seconds left in the third stanza. Elon put up the game's final touchdown when Pope connected with Hudgins for a 32-yard score in the air with 5:05 remaining in the contest.

Appalachian State amassed 31 first downs and 569 yards of total offense, including 303 in the air, while holding the Phoenix to 12 first downs and 286 net yards. ASU fashioned 34:29 in possession time, including 19:15 in the second half.

Edwards completed 15 of 20 passes with one interception on his way to 193 yards and a touchdown while Elder connected on 10 of his 14 passes with one pick en route to 110 yards and a TD. Pope threw for 232 yards on 18-for-33 passing with one interception and two touchdown tosses.

Mayfield posted game highs with nine receptions for 182 yards while Hudgins recorded career highs with eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

Phoenix linebacker Corey Weaver amassed a game-high and career-high 25 tackles, marking the most by an Elon player since teammate Chad Nkang achieved that same tally against SoCon foe Chattanooga last year. Weaver is now tied with Nkang and former ASU great Julius Thomas for the seventh-most tackles by a SoCon player in a single game.

Both teams return to Southern Conference action next Saturday as Elon hosts No. 24 Western Carolina at 2 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium while Appalachian State travels to Chattanooga for a 6 p.m. contest.
