Hudgins Dubbed National Statistical Champion

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. Elon sophomore wide receiver Terrell Hudgins (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount) has been declared the 2007 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision statistical champion in two categories – “Receptions Per Game” and “Receiving Yards Per Game.”

Hudgins, who led the nation with 10.6 receptions and 134.0 receiving yards per contest last fall, becomes the second Phoenix athlete to achieve FCS statistical champion status, joining former Elon linebacker and current Jacksonville Jaguars safety Chad Nkang, who was crowned the 2005 national champion in “Tackles Per Game.”

The Walter Payton Award finalist earned 2007 First Team All-America distinction on five occasions, receiving such recognition from the Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Associated Press, College Sporting News, The Sports Network and CollegeSportsReport.com. The Sports Media Entertainment Network named Hudgins its 2007 "Star of the Year" at the wide receiver position.

Dubbed a 2007 First Team All-Southern Conference player by both the league’s coaches and media, Hudgins ended up tied for 11th place in the FCS in scoring with 9.8 points per performance. He hauled in a program-record 16 receptions against both Liberty and Furman this past fall while also catching an Elon-record four touchdown passes against Liberty.

With 117 catches, Hudgins came away with both a Phoenix and SoCon single-season milestone in 2007. He set new Elon single-season plateaus with 1,474 receiving yards and 18 TD catches for the year and holds a SoCon single-season record with seven games of receiving for 100 or more yards. Hudgins earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week status once and National Offensive Player of the Week honors twice in 2007.

The receiving duo of Hudgins and senior Michael Mayers (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) established an NCAA single-season milestone for the most receptions (207) by two teammates this fall as well as the SoCon single-season plateau for the most receiving yards (2,528) by two teammates. The previous NCAA record was 189 receptions by Mississippi Valley State's Jerry Rice and Joe Thomas in 1984.

Powered by victories over then-No. 6 Wofford, then-No. 21 Georgia Southern and eventual Big South Conference champion Liberty, the Phoenix (7-4 overall, 4-3/Tied-3rd SoCon) finished 2007 ranked 23rd nationally in both the FCS Coaches' poll and The Sports Network's poll. Elon placed second in the country in passing offense, ninth in scoring offense, 16th in passing efficiency and 19th in total offense.
