Shuman Named SoCon Freshman of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced that Elon tailback Jamal Shuman (Fayetteville, N.C./Seventy-First) was elected its Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon by a vote of the league’s nine football sports information directors.

Shuman tallied his first 100-yard game at the college level, rushing for a career-high 166 yards – on just 18 carries – and his first collegiate touchdown as the Phoenix soared past Chattanooga 42-7 Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium. The first NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision team to win seven contests this year, Elon has now won four road games in the same season for the first time since 1999 and seven contests in a row overall for the first time since 1981.

For the second consecutive week, coach Pete Lembo’s unit maintained its program-best No. 3 ranking in The Sports Network’s weekly FCS national poll Monday afternoon. The Phoenix (7-1 overall, 5-0 SoCon), who received a first-place vote in the poll for the first time ever, is joined by five of its 2008 foes – No. 2 Appalachian State, No. 4 Wofford, No. 9 Richmond, No. 18 Furman and No. 20 Liberty. No. 3 Elon hosts No. 4 Wofford at 3 p.m. next Saturday at Rhodes Stadium in SportSouth’s SoCon Saturday Game.

The Phoenix also held steady at No. 3 this week in the Sports Media Entertainment Network Broadcasters’ poll for the second consecutive week. Elon was promoted from No. 6 last week to No. 5 this week – with a first-place vote – in the AnyGivenSaturday.com poll and from No. 8 last week to No. 7 this week in the FCS Coaches poll.
