Eight Named to SoCon Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference teams for the 2007-08 winter season. A total of 137 student-athletes in five sports, representing all 11 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team. The 137 student-athletes averaged a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Elon had eight student-athletes named to the Academic All-Conference team.  The indoor track and field team led the way with six student-athletes, Katelyn Ealer (Psychology), Julie McGowan (Business Administration), Colleen McCarthy (Mathematics), Grace Ilevbare (Chemistry), Jennine Strange (Exercise Sport Science) and Meaghan Dolan (Elementary Education), being named to the Academic All-Conference Team. 

Senior Katie Whidden (Business Administration) and sophomore Tiffany Davis (Leisure and Sport Management) of the women’s basketball team were also named to the team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently concluded campaign.
This is the sixth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.

The league’s women’s indoor track and field teams placed 62 student-athletes on the academic team while 32 women’s basketball players were honored. Western Carolina led the way among schools with 22 selections, followed by Chattanooga (17) and Davidson (14).
