ELON, N.C. – Elon University head football coach Pete Lembo has announced the hiring of John Strollo as an assistant football coach. Strollo replaces Ricky Perez, who left last month for personal pursuits. While Perez coached the Phoenix wide receivers the past two years, Strollo will take charge of the tight ends and Lembo will oversee the wide receivers this fall.
Strollo served Duke University as an assistant football coach the past three years, working with the tight ends his first campaign before guiding the offensive line the past two years. He directed the offensive line at University of Maine for one season (2004), Cornell University for three seasons (2001-2003), Lafayette College for five seasons (1996-2000), University of Massachusetts for five seasons (1991-1995) and Northeastern University for seven seasons (1984-1990). He also coached the tight ends at Lafayette, Massachusetts and Northeastern and served as an offensive coordinator at Cornell and Northeastern.
“We are very fortunate to have a veteran coach with John's experience and expertise joining our staff at this time,” Lembo said. “He will be a great fit on our staff and has preexisting relationships with a number of our assistant coaches. John has a strong reputation as a detailed teacher and as a knowledgeable offensive coach. His background at Duke, Cornell, Lafayette and Boston College makes him very well-suited to work with and recruit the kind of student-athletes that we have here at Elon.”
Strollo lettered for the Boston College football team before earning his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1976. He also collected a master’s degree in secondary education and administration from Springfield College in 1986. Strollo began his career at Washburn University, coaching the defensive line for the 1983 campaign.
Strollo married his college sweetheart, Janet, a fellow Boston College graduate and current speech pathologist at Duke Hospital. Their daughters, Katie and Emily, are both Syracuse University graduates. Katie also earned a master’s degree from UNC Greensboro.
