Elon Posts Fourth Straight Shutout; Ties School Record

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After a scoreless first half, the Elon men’s soccer team let loose in the final period, striking three times to earn a 3-0 victory against East Tennessee State at Summers-Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Senior Justin Wyatt headed in his first goal of the year, the ultimate game-winner in the 66th minute of action. With the tally, Wyatt moved past Robert Latimer (1998-2001) for second place in the Elon record books with 27 career goals.

“I felt like we played a strong second half against a well-organized ETSU team,” stated Elon head coach Darren Powell. “We applied more pressure on them after a slow first half and we were able to get the first goal and then get the second and third for a good road victory. Now we’ll get ready to play one of the top programs in the country at Wake Forest on Wednesday.”

With a fourth straight clean slate performance, Elon (3-2-1) tied the school record for consecutive shutouts. The last time a Phoenix squad held opponents scoreless for four straight games was in September 2007. Junior goalie Clint Irwin has now posted 13 career shutouts and holds third place on Elon’s career chart. He is just two back of Taylor Saxe (2003-06) for second place.

After a sluggish first half, Elon came out with a vengeance in the second period. The Phoenix earned several corner kicks to open the final 45 minutes. At the 65:33 mark, senior midfielder Erfan Imeni sent a good delivery in the box and Wyatt headed in the finish to put Elon on top.

The gates opened and Elon continued to attack Buc keeper Scott Rosman. Less than 10 minutes after the first marker, freshman Chris Thomas fed senior Daniel Street who tucked the ball in the roof of the net at 76:14. The goal was Street’s first of the season.

Elon cushioned its lead two minutes later when Street rocketed the ball across the field. Imeni one-touched to Thomas who tucked his third goal of the season in the net.

After holding a slim 7-6 shot advantage in the first half, the Phoenix controlled the final period and finished the game with a 21-10 lead in shots. Irwin made three saves in the effort while Rosman recorded six stops.

Elon will make the short trip down I-40 to take on the second-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m. ETSU (1-2-2) will travel to No. 3 North Carolina on Tuesday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
