ELON, N.C. – Elon senior Steven Kinney had a successful three days at the 2010 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine at Central Broward Regional Park in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The defender helped the Condivo team to an undefeated performance, winning all three games at the combine.
“The combine was actually a lot of fun,” said Kinney after his return to Elon. “You would think going down there, you would be nervous, but once you hit the field it is just a good time playing with good players. It was great to be back on the soccer field. There were 18 guys on each team and most of us didn’t know each other, but at the end of the four days we were all good friends. The camaraderie is one of the things that make sports great.”
Kinney started at center back and played the full 90 minutes in the first game, scoring the team’s game-winning goal after he held off his defender and put home a diving header off a free kick en route to Condivo’s 4-1 victory over F50i.
In game two, Condivo posted a 2-1 win over Predator X. Kinney competed at the right back position during the second half of action. In the final game, Condivo defeated Jabulani, 1-0, as Kinney moved back to his natural center back position.
Said Elon head coach Darren Powell, “It was good to watch Steven play at the combine. He had a solid game on Saturday against very good competition. It was nice to see him score a brave, diving header goal. Now, we wait to see what Steven’s next soccer assignment will be.”
Kinney was the lone member of the Southern Conference and the first-ever Elon player to be invited to the combine.
The annual MLS SuperDraft will take place on Thursday, January 14, with live coverage of the first round beginning at 2 p.m. on ESPN2. For more information, and for complete coverage on all four rounds, log on to www.mlsnet.com.
