GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman
Catherine Brinkman netted her first two career goals, including the game-winner in double overtime, to lead the Elon University women’s soccer team back from a two-goal deficit to claim a 3-2 win over Furman on Saturday night.
After scoring in the 80th minute to make it a 2-2 game, Brinkman put the Phoenix (9-5-1, 4-3 Southern Conference) over the hump in the 109th minute in double overtime after senior
Brittany Hallberg hit Brinkman in the center of the box from 11-yards out to give Elon the victory.
“We got off to another slow start tonight against a good team, but our team really showed its character in the second half,” said Elon head women’s soccer coach
Chris Neal. “Catherine Brinkman came up huge for us tonight and for her to score her first two collegiate goals in a game of this magnitude was outstanding.”
Elon remains unbeaten in overtime play, moving to 3-0-1 this season, while Furman remains winless in overtime contests at 0-4-2. Elon registered a season-high 21 shots in the contest, including nine on goal.
The Paladins netted a pair of goals early in the first half to take a 2-0 advantage, as goals in the sixth and 21st minutes by Shelnutt and White from about 15 yards away put Elon behind.
Senior captain
Alanna Winsper had a chance to make it a 1-1 match in the 15th minute with a free kick from the top left of the box, but her strike landed just high of the goal in the top right corner to keep the Phoenix scoreless.
The Phoenix limited Furman to a 2-1 lead late in the first half after Stark dribbled through several Paladin defenders from midfield to power her fourth goal of the season past Smith in the 37th minute, giving Elon momentum going into the locker room at halftime.
Elon outshot Furman, 12-9, in the opening frame, while also holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Phoenix finished the game with an 8-3 advantage in the corner.
Sophomore goalie
Kristen Haney helped keep Elon within striking distance of the Paladins in the 61st minute after going up high to save an Alexa Jones strike to keep it a 2-1 game.
Brinkman helped Elon make it a 2-2 game in the 80th minute after
Kimmie Krauss found her fellow rookie in front of the net for her first career goal.
The Phoenix nearly claimed a 3-2 lead with less than four minutes to play after back-to-back shots on goal, but a great diving save to the right by Furman’s Smith kept the game tied at two apiece. Elon missed another opportunity off an
Olivia Mackey corner late to keep the game tied, 2-2, after regulation.
On the brink of earning a draw after a scoreless first overtime, Brinkman helped Elon with less than two minutes left in double overtime after her shot from the middle of the box landed in the net past Smith to give Elon the win.
Elon heads down the road to Spartanburg, S.C. on Sunday, Oct. 17, for a 2 p.m. match with Wofford.
