Football Players Work Out for Pro Scouts

ELON, N.C. -- Elon seniors Terrell Hudgins, David Harrison, Andre Campbell, Nolan Ward and Eric Ludwig worked out for scouts from multiple NFL teams –including the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and New York Giants – on Tuesday.

The workouts began in the Elon weight room where the quintet went through the broad jump, vertical jump and bench press.  The workouts then moved to the track where they ran the 40 and performed in other drills for the scouts.

"My trainer had me ready for just about everything that we did," said Hudgins after his workouts.  "I performed better than what I have in past years in some of the drills, which was exciting.  Hopefully all of this will help me out in the future. My 40 time was the main thing that we had to focus on.  They wanted me somewhere in the 4.5 mark and on one of my runs I was able to get that time."

Campbell posted the top broad jump, soaring 10'4".  Hudgins' best leap checked in at 9'6".  Ward also went over the nine-foot mark, jumping 9'10".

Ward's vertical jump of 37" topped the group, while Campbell was close behind with a 36 1/2" vertical.  Hudgins recorded a 33" vertical.

In the bench press, each athlete recorded as many reps as possible at 225 pounds.  Campbell was impressive, notching 33 reps.  Harrison was not far behind as he checked in with 26 reps.  Ludwig finished with 19, Ward 15 and Hudgins 11 reps.

Of his performance in the bench press, Campbell said, "That was the most that I have ever done.  I did 30 in training, but I think that little extra edge of being around all of the people really helped and pushed me to get to 33."

After moving to the track, the group put on their running shoes to be clocked in the 40.  Hudgins' best run was clocked at 4.52 seconds while the 248-pound Campbell raced down the track in 4.59 seconds.  Ward posted a 4.57 time in the 40.

On the field, each player was tested in the three-cone drill as well as a shuttle drill.  Campbell completed the three-cone drill in 7.18 seconds while Hudgins posted a 7.48 time.  Ward's 4.27 second time in the shuttle topped the group.

"I feel blessed," added Campbell.  "This is an opportunity that I have always dreamt of.  When I was in high school, I wasn’t even sure that I would have this opportunity.  This past season sealed my decision to try and make it.  I know that I will be really blessed if I am a late-round pick or even a free agent signing."
