SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon junior wide receiver
Aaron Mellette was honored on Thursday afternoon as the recipient of the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Month for September. This marks the first such recognition of Mellette's career.
In four September outings, Mellette racked up 42 receptions and 591 receiving yards, finishing the month ranked second nationally in both receptions per game and receiving yards per game. The junior from Sanford, N.C. had a touchdown catch in each game for the Phoenix. Mellette recorded two 100-yard games, including a 16-catch, 237-yard performance in a win at North Carolina Central. The 237 receiving yards are the most by an Elon receiver since the program moved to NCAA Division I play for the 1999 season. He also caught 11 passes for 180 yards in the opener at Vanderbilt. For the month, Mellette averaged 14.1 yards per reception and 162.2 all-purpose yards per game while also earning one Southern Conference Player of the Week award.
The Southern Conference athletes of the month are nominated by each member institution and selected by the conference office.
Mellette and the Phoenix will look to earn the second SoCon win of the season for the team this Saturday when Elon visits Western Carolina in a 3 p.m. contest.
