SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Among the eight student-athletes honored as the Southern Conference's November Athlete of the Month were Elon football players
Aaron Mellette and
Joshua Jones. The Phoenix swept the football awards with Mellette earning offensive honors for the second time this year and Jones collecting the defensive award for the first time in his career.
The team's three SoCon Player of the Month honors this season are the most for the program since 2006.
Despite Elon playing only two games in the month, Mellette averaged 11 catches and 190 yards receiving. The junior wide receiver from Sanford, N.C., had eight grabs for 144 yards and two scores as Elon upset No. 17 Furman. He then added 14 catches for 236 yards (one yard shy of a career-high) and a TD against nationally-ranked Appalachian State in the season finale. For the season, Mellette set a new Elon and SoCon record with 1,639 receiving yards, breaking the mark of 1,633 yards set by former teammate Terrell Hudgins in one fewer game.
Jones averaged 12 tackles per game in the month of November, totaling 24 in a pair of Elon games. He earned SoCon Player of the Week honors after making 13 total tackles, 4.0 TFL, a sack and a 40-yard interception return for a TD in Elon’s win over No. 17 Furman. The senior linebacker from Tampa, Fla., then had 11 tackles against Appalachian State. Jones recorded 11 or more tackles in seven games this season, including each of his last five outings. He finished his career as Elon’s fifth-leading tackler in program history with 343.
