Elon Game Notes

ELON, N.C. –
The Elon University softball team is back in action this weekend when the Phoenix (3-1) hosts the Elon Invitational Friday-Sunday, Feb. 18-20, at East Field. Elon opens play on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Seton Hall. Click here for a complete schedule of events.

ELON VS. THE FIELD: This weekend will mark the second meeting for Elon against the Flyers of Dayton and the Pirates of Seton Hall, as well as the first ever meeting with the Bears of Morgan State. The Phoenix and the Flyers last saw one another on March 10, 2002, when Elon came away with a 3-1 victory. It’s been seven years since the Pirates of Seton Hall took a 5-0 win over Elon on March 14, 2004.

THE RADUENZ FILE: The 2011 season marks Patti Raduenz’s 11th season as Elon’s head coach. Raduenz currently holds a 250-302-2 career record. Raduenz is 19 wins shy of passing former Elon head coach Sue Leonard for the most victories in school history.

IN THE BOOKS: Elon finished the Phoenix Leadoff Classic with a 3-1 record after winning two games over Youngstown State (1-3) and splitting two with Kent State (2-2). The Phoenix won the three games with a combined score of 18-8. Both games on Saturday, Feb. 12 were walk-off wins for the Phoenix. Emerald Graham hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Hannah Shelton in a 4-3 win over the Penguins. In the game against the Golden Flashes, Jackie Gonzalez scored the game-winning run on a throwing error for another 4-3 victory on the day. Lauren Taylor earned two of the three wins for the Phoenix over the weekend after pitching 14 innings and striking out 14 batters.

ON DECK: After the Elon Invitational this weekend, the Phoenix will travel to Columbia, S.C., for a doubleheader with the Gamecocks of South Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 26. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

QUEENS OF THE CONFERENCE: After the first week of play, Elon and several Phoenix players sit close to or at the top of the standings in the conference. As a team, the Phoenix is currently second in batting (.317) and third in fielding (.971). Individually, Emerald Graham ranks first in RBI (12), home runs (4), total bases (20), and slugging percentage (1.538). Caitlin McGowan ranks first in doubles (4) and second in on-base percentage (.714), while Tomeka Watson sits in a tie for second in stolen bases (3/4).
