Elon Game Notes
ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team (11-4) will open Southern Conference action on the road this weekend, as the Phoenix makes the trek to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. to take on the College of Charleston Cougars. The three-game set will open with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 12, before the two squads battle in the series finale on Sunday, March 13, at 1 p.m.
THE SERIES: Elon is 10-15 all time against College of Charleston after going 2-1 against the Cougars last season. The Phoenix recorded an 8-0 six-inning victory on the front end of a doubleheader before falling 4-1 in the nightcap. The next day, Elon bounced back to earn a 5-4 win and take the season series.
ON DECK: After its series at College of Charleston, the Phoenix will play a mid-week game Wednesday, March 16 against North Carolina State. Game time with the Wolfpack is set for 6 p.m. at East Field.
THE RADUENZ FILE: The 2011 season marks
Patti Raduenz’s 11th season as Elon’s head coach. Raduenz currently holds a 258-305-2 career record. Raduenz is 12 wins shy of passing former Elon head coach Sue Leonard for the most victories in school history.
SENIOR STANDOUT: Senior
Caitlin McGowan is off a great start to her fourth and final season at Elon. McGowan leads the team in batting (.432) and is second in hits (16) and on-base percentage (.569). The Virginia native has hit a conference-leading six doubles on the season, while also drawing 11 walks (second in SoCon).
TAYLOR WINS SECOND WEEKLY AWARD: Lauren Taylor was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games played from February 28-March 6. The award marks Taylor’s second weekly league made three appearances, including two starts, and went 2-1 at the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. The senior went 13.2 innings in the circle with a 1.62 ERA, allowing only three runs off 14 hits while striking out 16. Taylor improved her season record to 6-2 with an overall ERA of 1.88.
