Phoenix Welcomes Chattanooga to East Field This Weekend

ELON, N.C. –
The Elon University softball team will look to gain ground in the Southern Conference standings this weekend, as the Phoenix (15-11, 2-4) hosts the Chattanooga Lady Mocs (22-8, 5-0) on Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3, at East Field in a key three-game set. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with game one slated for 1 p.m., before wrapping up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

THE SERIES: Elon and Chattanooga have met 19 times prior to this weekend’s series, with the Lady Mocs holding a 13-6 advantage in the all-time series. The Phoenix took two out of three meetings against UTC last year in Chattanooga after taking both games of an April 17 doubleheader, 3-2 and 7-6. Elon could not complete the sweep a day later, dropping a 6-0 decision to the Lady Mocs. Kaitlyn Piazzolla drove in seven runs in three games for the Phoenix in last year’s meetings, including five RBI in the back end of the doubleheader on April 17.

THE RADUENZ FILE:
The 2011 season marks Patti Raduenz’s11th season as Elon’s head coach. Raduenz currently holds a 262-312-2 career record. Raduenz is eight wins shy of passing former Elon head coach Sue Leonard for the most victories in school history.

ON DECK: Following the team’s three-game series with the Lady Mocs, Elon remains home for its next five games. The Phoenix hosts North Carolina Central for two games on April 7, beginning at 5 p.m. at East Field before welcoming the Georgia Southern Eagles into town on April 9-10 for a three-game set.

AWARD WINNERS:
As a team, Elon has captured a total of five Southern Conference player/pitcher of the week awards so far this season. Senior hurler Lauren Taylor has picked up pitcher of the week honors three times, while junior southpaw #Erin O’Shea# earned the honor once (Feb. 28). Senior outfielder Emerald Graham won player of the week accolades after the first week of the season on Feb. 14.

MULTITASKING:
Sophomore Tomeka Watson has registered a total of 10 multiple hit games this season, all of which have been two-hit performances. No Elon player has tallied more than three hits in a single game this season. Jackie Gonzalez and Caitlin McGowan have both tallied three three-hit games for the Phoenix.

GOING STREAKING:
Pam DelPizzo is currently riding a team-best six-game hitting streak. DelPizzo’s streak is tied for the second longest by an Elon player this year with Emerald Graham. Tomeka Watson began the season on a 12-game hitting streak, which is the longest by an Elon player so far this season.

STOP, THIEF!: Sophomore Tomeka Watson has tallied 13 bases so far this season, good for season in the Southern Conference behind Chattanooga’s Lyndsey Stiles (18). In her second season, Watson has pilfered a total of 37 bases, tying her with Angie Padon for eighth on the all-time list.

ROUND-TRIPPING: Junior Kaitlyn Piazzolla moved alone into third place recently on the all-time home runs list after cracking her 19th career round-tripper at College of Charleston on March 12. Senior Emerald Graham is just behind, as the Hoosier state native has belted a total of 14 homers in only her second season at Elon, tying her with Christy Melton for eighth all-time.

WALK THIS WAY: Senior Caitlin McGowan is tied for the league lead in walks this season with 18 and currently leads the Southern Conference in on-base percentage at .500. In her career, McGowan has drawn a total of 71 walks.
