Elon Game Notes

ELON, N.C. –
Currently riding a three-game winning streak, the Elon University softball team (23-20, 8-10) travels to Greenville, S.C. this week for its final Southern Conference road series of the season when the Phoenix faces Furman (14-28, 6-12) on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28.

THE SERIES:
The Phoenix and Paladins have met 31 times prior to this week’s series, as Furman holds a 19-12 advantage all-time against Elon. Elon has taken the last two series against Furman and four out of the last six games.

ON DECK: Following its mid-week series at Furman, Elon returns home to East Field on Saturday, April 30, for a doubleheader against Radford at 1 p.m. The two teams last met in the Athens Regional in the NCAA Softball Championship last year, as the Highlanders handed the Phoenix an 8-0 setback to end its historic 2010 season.

THE RADUENZ FILE: Elon head coach Patti Raduenz is in her 11th season at the helm and holds a 270-321-2 career record. Raduenz passed former Elon head coach Sue Leonard for the most wins in program history on April 23 after the Phoenix completed a three-game sweep of Western Carolina with a 7-6 come-from-behind win.

LAFFERTY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Elon shortstop Danielle Lafferty was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week on April 25 following a stellar week for the Phoenix. The Bear, Del. native helped the Phoenix to a 3-1 record on the week, including a conference series sweep over Western Carolina.  In the series finale against the Catamounts, the Elon shortstop hit a two-run walk-off home run with two outs to give the Phoenix a come-from-behind 7-6 win.  In four games over the week, Lafferty batted .636 and knocked in seven runs while scoring twice.  She ended the week with a .615 on-base percentage while slugging .909.

ELON IN APRIL:
Since 1992, Elon is 164-175-1 in the month of April. Last season, the Phoenix went 11-7 in the third month of play, while the team’s best performance came in 1997 when Elon went 13-4.

THE ROAD TO STATESBORO:
The Elon softball team will look to defend its Southern Conference title from a year ago this season in Statesboro, Ga., as the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament is set for May 11-14. All nine SoCon teams will participate at Eagle Field on the campus of Georgia Southern, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional softball tournament. This year will mark the 18th annual SoCon Softball Championship.
