ELON, N.C. -- The Elon football team closed its preseason practice slate by holding a scrimmage inside of Rhodes Stadium on Thursday evening.
The team worked primarily on late-game situations before closing with an overtime period.
Prior to overtime, Elon put up just two scores – one a seven-yard strike from
Thomas Wilson to
Aaron Mellette that finished off a seven-play, 80-yard drive that took 2:40 off of the clock. The other came on the last possession before OT when Wilson found
Matt Eastman for a short pass.
The defense held the offense to just a field goal on the first overtime possession before Wilson teamed up with Mellette on the ensuing possession for a TD.
Head coach Jason Swepson on the final scrimmage:
"I still don't think we fully understand the situation. We were slow to the line on offense when we were behind and the defense was late to line up when they were ahead. We have a lot to learn, but I like where we're headed. This film will help us understand how to manage the game under duress. The good thing is that we didn't have any turnovers. We just have to do a job managing the clock and the situations."
Swepson on what he's learned in his first camp as a head coach:
"I've learned to get a real sense of the team's health and how to cut down practice. When to demand and when to back off. It's tough the first time through it. I knew how to manage the running backs, but to manage 105 including the coaches is a little different."
Swepson on the last few position battles:
"We're going to watch the film as a staff and make some decisions. In my mind, I have some things locked up. I just want to watch the film to confirm it."
Swepson on the regular-season practice schedule:
"Normally we'll have a work day on Sunday. Monday, the players have off. Tuesday and Wednesday are work days and Thursday is a polish day."
