The Matchup
Elon and Furman are meeting for 16th time overall and the 14th straight year.  The Phoenix enters this game with a 3-4 record after dropping Western Carolina 42-31 on Homecoming at Rhodes Stadium last week.  Furman has lost three straight to fall to 2-6.  The Paladins lost 38-17 last Saturday at home against third-ranked Georgia Southern.

The Series
Elon trails the all-time series with Furman by a 10-5 margin, however, the maroon and gold has won the last four in the series, including a 41-34 decision in Greenville, S.C., last year when the Paladins were ranked 17th nationally.  The teams first met at Furman on Sept. 25, 1920 with the Paladins claiming a 33-0 victory.  The next meeting did not occur until 1997, also at Furman.  Elon got its first win in the series in 1999 – a 24-22 victory in Greenville.

The Coaches
Elon:
Jason Swepson (Boston College ‘92) is 8-10 and is in his second year as a head coach, both with the Phoenix.  Prior to becoming Elon’s head coach, Swepson spent 12 years as an assistant with Tom O’Brien at both Boston College and NC State.

Furman: Also in his second season as a collegiate head coach, Bruce Fowler (Furman ‘81) is 8-11 for his career.

A Numbers Game
• 4 - Consecutive 300-yard passing games for Thomas Wilson who passed for 412 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in the win over Western Carolina.  He earned SoCon Player of the Week honors for his performance.
• 50 - Tackles made by Jonathan Spain in the last four games.
• 135 - Career PATs made by Adam Shreiner, a new Elon career record.

It Happened on October 27
Elon Football: On Oct. 27, 1973, Elon knocked off Wofford by a 33-25 margin.  It was the 11th consecutive victory for the program (dating back to 1972).  Elon would finish the regular season at 11-0 before falling 42-14 to Abilene Christian in the second round of the NAIA national playoffs.

World Events: On Oct. 27, 1682, the city of Philadelphia, Pa., was founded.

Ties With This Week’s Opponent
• Elon freshmen Adrian McClendon and Justin Osborne attended Jacksonville, Fla.’s, First Coast High with Furman’s Austin Williams.
• Elon’s Jack Williams and Furman’s Ernie Cain both attended Woodward Academy in Georgia.  Also from Georgia’s Grayson High are Elon’s Haris Cesko and Furman’s Sebastian Rice.  A third Georgia high school connection between the two teams features Hillgrove High where both Elon’s John Silas and Furman’s Ira McCune attended.

Racking Up the Numbers
Over his last two games - against Appalachian State and Western Carolina - senior wide receiver Aaron Mellette has been outstanding.  In those two contests Mellette has caught 18 passes for 391 yards and six touchdowns.  That accounts for 47.5 percent of his 824 receiving yards on the season as well as nearly half of his 13 TDs on the year.

Junior linebacker Jonathan Spain has also been putting up impressive numbers recently.  In his last four games Spain has made 50 total tackles – more than 75 percent of his 66 stops for the year.

Solid Shreiner
Senior kicker Adam Shreiner is 11-of-14 on his field goal attempts this year.  Shreiner’s 45 career field goals are the second-most in program history as he trails only Andrew Wilcox (2005-08) who made 59 field goals.  The senior also moved past Wilcox to become Elon’s all-time leader in PATs during the victory over Western Carolina.  Shreiner has now kicked 135 extra points in his career.

Streaking
With its 42-31 victory over Western Carolina, Elon claimed its seventh consecutive win over the Catamounts.  The last Western decision over the Phoenix came on Oct. 29, 2005 when Elon dropped a 31-26 contest in Cullowhee.
