The Series
Elon trails the all-time series with The Citadel by a 6-5 margin, however, the maroon and gold has won the last four in the series, including an 18-15 overtime decision in Elon last year. The teams first met at The Citadel on Sept. 25, 1954 with the Bulldogs claiming a 21-13 victory.
The Coaches
Elon: Jason Swepson (Boston College ‘92) is 8-11 and is in his second year as a head coach, both with the Phoenix. Prior to becoming Elon’s head coach, Swepson spent 12 years as an assistant with Tom O’Brien at both Boston College and NC State.
The Citadel: In his eighth season at The Citadel (and 16th overall as a collegiate head coach), Kevin Higgins has compiled a career record of 91-76-1 and is 35-51 in his time in Charleston.
A Numbers Game
• 6 - Consecutive games with at least two touchdowns for
Aaron Mellette who had two TD grabs last Saturday against Furman.
• 5,776 - Career passing yards for
Thomas Wilson who moved into second place in that category in program history last week.
It Happened on November 3
Elon Football: On Nov. 3, 2007, Elon quarterback Scott Riddle passed for a SoCon-record 534 yards, but the Phoenix dropped a 52-49 game at Furman.
World Events: On Nov. 3, 1953, the first live color coast-to-coast broadcast originated in New York City.
Ties With This Week’s Opponent
• Elon punter
Kenton Beal and Bulldog running back Rickey Anderson both graduated from Cape Coral High in Florida.
• Adam Shriener, Elon’s kicker, and The Citadel’s Cody Richardson, Koty Allen and Harrison Davis all attended Walton High in Marietta, Ga.
Another Game, Another Multiple TD Performance
Aaron Mellette has an impressive streak going. After a slow start to the year during which he caught just one touchdown pass in the first two games of the season, Mellette has caught fire, grabbing at least two TD receptions in each of the past six games. He now has 15 touchdowns on the year, just four shy of Randy Moss’ SoCon record of 19 TDs in a single season set in 1996.
Racking Up the Numbers
Over his last three games - against Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Furman - senior wide receiver
Aaron Mellette has been outstanding. In those three contests Mellette has caught 32 passes for 585 yards and eight touchdowns. That accounts for 57.5 percent of his 1,018 receiving yards on the season as well as more than half of his 15 TDs on the year.
Sophomore linebacker
Jonathan Spain has also been putting up impressive numbers recently. In his last five games Spain has made 61 total tackles – nearly 80 percent of his team-leading 77 stops for the year.
