Phoenix Concludes Action at Duke Fab Four

Final Draws

DURHAM, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team wrapped up action at the Duke Fab Four Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 16, inside the Sheffield Tennis Center. Due to heavy rains for most of last night and this morning, the competition was moved indoors today, forcing several withdrawals.

Cameron Silverman had a big win for the maroon and gold in the quarterfinals over second-seeded and No. 52-ranked Alexis Heugas from VCU. After losing the first set (3-6), Silverman bounced back in the second to grind out a 7-6 (5) victory over Heugas. It was all Silverman in the third, as the Phoenix junior claimed a 6-2 decision to win the match. Heugas is the highest ranked player Silverman has beaten in his career. Silverman eventually fell in straight sets to fourth-seeded Fred Saba, 7-6, 6-2.

Along with Stefan Fortmann, Silverman also reached the doubles final against Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler from Duke, but the duo dropped a hard-fought 8-2 decision.

Brian Kowalski had an impressive weekend in his first competition at Elon. In the first round of singles, Kowalski claimed a three-set (7-5, 3-6, 6-3) win over William & Mary’s Aaron Chaffee.

Jordan Kaufman also picked up a win for the Phoenix in singles, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory over North Carolina’s Taylor Meyer in the 13th place bracket on Saturday.

Elon is at home next weekend, Sept. 21-23, for the Elon Fall Invitational.
