BURLINGTON, N.C. – The top-seeded Elon University men’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 decision against eighth-seeded Furman on Friday morning, April 19, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Elon (16-7) takes on the winner of fourth-seeded UNCG and fifth-seeded Chattanooga tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Furman ends its season with a record of 9-14.
“We had great week of practice coming into today and I’m proud of the way we came in a took care of business,” said Elon head coach
Michael Leonard. “We look forward to getting back out there tomorrow afternoon.”
Stefan Fortmann clinched the match win for the maroon and gold at No. 2 singles, as the sophomore claimed a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Furman’s Matt Browne to put Elon ahead, 4-0.
Robert Lindgren was the first to finish for Elon at No. 3 singles, as the rookie registered a straight sets win, 6-4, 6-0, against Furman’s Alex Christ to give the Phoenix an early edge.
Brian Kowalski pushed Elon out to a 2-0 advantage at No. 5 singles, defeating Furman’s Luke Synn in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Cameron Silverman, this year’s SoCon Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and ranked 59th in the nation, extended Elon’s lead to 3-0 and put his team within a point of clinching the match after defeating Andrew Mellow, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
