Phoenix Football Prepares for Second Scrimmage

ELON, N.C. -- With the second scrimmage of the spring looming on Saturday, the Elon football team worked out in uppers on Thursday morning on the Hunt and Tucker practice fields.

Here were coach Jason Swepson's thoughts following the session:

Swepson on Thursday's practice:
"We had a crisp morning with the weather, and we had a crisp practice as a team. We're learning how to practice in uppers. We've got a lot of energy and enthusiasm out here. The kids love playing the game. We need a good showing in our scrimmage on Saturday. I like where we're at right now. The kids are really attacking practice. The offense did not turn the ball over today."

Swepson on the special teams units:
"That's a major concern for us. We have a couple guys on campus right now that are trying to improve. And we have a scholarship kid coming in as a freshman who will have the opportunity to compete. We're getting some work protection-wise, but the real competition for kicker will come in the preseason."

Swepson on Saturday's upcoming scrimmage:
"We're going to try to get in 80 plays, 40-50 with the ones and about 30 with the twos. We'll also work on some situational things - end of the game, end of the half stuff to see if we can make some good decisions. We'll come out and do some special teams work early and start off with two live punts and go from there."

Swepson on the final week of spring:
"On defense, we have to get some more film on the triple-option so we'll do some more team periods on that. We have to come out of the spring feeling good about our defense against the triple-option. The offense is working on fundmentals and making sure they're on the same page."

Saturday, April 27 - 1:00 p.m. (Scrimmage in Rhodes Stadium)
Tuesday, April 30 - 8:45 a.m.
Thursday, May 2 - 8:45 a.m.
Friday, May 3 - 7:00 p.m. (Spring Game in Rhodes Stadium)
