Mellette Snares TD in Ravens Debut

Watch Aaron Mellette's Touchdown Catch

ELON, N.C. --
Making his debut in the National Football League, former Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette did something that Phoenix fans grew accustomed to seeing from him - catch a touchdown pass.

With about eight minutes remaining in the Baltimore Ravens' 44-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the preseason opener, Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor lofted a pass down the sideline in the direction of Mellette who beat Bucs' defensive back Deveron Carter for a 21-yard touchdown reception.

Mellette, who was a first-team All-Southern Conference pick and earned All-America accolades from seven different organizations as a senior, concluded his career in the maroon and gold with 304 receptions for 4,254 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Mellette will have another chance to impress the Ravens' coaching staff as Baltimore will host the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, August 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Mellette is not the only former Phoenix player hoping to earn a spot on an NFL roster this fall.  Former Elon offensive lineman Rodney Austin was on the practice squad with the Detroit Lions last season and is hoping to earn a 53-man roster spot with that club this year.  Austin and the Lions will play their first preseason game of the year on Friday, August 9 against the New York Jets at 7:30 p.m.
