Murphy Ties Career Mark as Elon Tops Delaware

ELON, N.C. – Senior goalie Kate Murphy tied a career-high mark with 11 saves as the Elon University women's soccer claimed a 2-0 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday, Oct. 12, on Senior Day at Rudd Field.

Elon (5-9, 1-5 CAA) earned its first league victory in the match, as a pair of first half goals by Raychel Diver (17') and Sydney Schilling (33') gave the Phoenix breathing room against Delaware (6-7-1, 2-2-1 CAA).

"I'm very pleased with today's result against a very talented and well-coached Delaware team," said Elon head coach Chris Neal. "It was only a matter of time until we got things going – the team deserved today's result. Our recent results have been very harsh despite great team efforts. I'm very proud of their effort today and it's always wonderful to close with a win on Senior Day."

A flurry of activity inside the box led to Elon's first goal of the match following a Schilling corner kick, as Diver found the end of it for a powerful strike near the left post to put the Phoenix up 1-0.

Sixteen minutes later, Elon was awarded a penalty kick after the Blue Hens fouled inside the box. Schilling ripped the ball behind UD keeper Jess Figueroa for the goal to give the Phoenix a 2-0 advantage.

Both squads had ample scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes, as Delaware led 5-4 in shots on goal and Elon led 4-1 in corner kicks.

The Blue Hens peppered Murphy and the Phoenix defense with a barrage of shots in the final 45 minutes, but everyone held their ground to keep the shutout intact. Murphy now has three matches with double-digit saves, as today's 11-save performance ties her career-high mark set on Sept. 21, 2012, against Western Carolina.

Elon closes its regular season with three straight road matches, beginning with a 2 p.m. contest at William & Mary on Oct. 19.
