Elon Drops Road Contest at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite taking an early lead on the Tribe, the Elon University women's soccer team could not overcome a pair of goals late in the first period in a 3-1 setback at William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 19.

Elon drops to 5-10 (1-6 CAA) with the setback, while William & Mary moves to 11-3-1 (5-2 CAA) on the year.

Grace Bennett pushed the maroon and gold to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute after a failed clearance by the Tribe led to an opening for the rookie from Rocky River, Ohio. Bennett finished into left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

However, the Tribe scored the equalizer in the 29th minute on a Sami Grasso goal on a through ball from Emory Camper. Ten minutes later, the Phoenix fell behind, 2-1, after a collision near the net between Elon keeper Kate Murphy and a W&M defender led to an open strike for Rachel Moore.

After the half, Leci Irvin gave the Tribe a 3-1 advantage on her second goal of the season. Irvin took a cross from Barbara Platenberg on the right side for the goal.

Elon ended the match trailing 10-3 in shots on goal. The two teams finished tied in corner kicks at two apiece.

Elon returns to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 24, for a rare 2 p.m. kick at Towson.
