TOWSON, Md. – The Elon University women's soccer team could not recover from an early goal by the Towson Tigers on Friday, Oct. 24, as the Phoenix dropped a 2-0 decision in Colonial Athletic Association action in Towson, Md.
Elon drops to 5-11 (1-7 CAA) with the setback, while Towson improves to 5-8-4 (2-4-2 CAA) with the win.
The Tigers scored in the fourth minute of the match as a hard shot from the top of the 18-yard box by Katie Ponce snuck behind Phoenix keeper
Kate Murphy for a goal to make it a 1-0 match.
Raychel Diver got a decent shot off for Elon in the 34th minute, but it was blocked by the Tigers defense to avoid the equalizer.
Marissa Russo had a good look for the Phoenix in the 49th minute just following intermission, but her strike was saved by Towson goalie Erin Quinn. Quinn made another save on a shot by
Rachel Hallman in the 57th minute to avoid the equalizer yet again.
The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage in the 65th minute when Morgan Fraczkowski scored from six yards out in the middle of the box on a cross by Gabby Scirica.
Towson held Elon in check from that point forward, as the maroon and gold were unable to get a clean look at a shot on goal in the match's final 25 minutes.
Elon attempted six total shots in the setback, two of which were on frame. Towson ended the match with 10 shots on target. The Tigers held Elon, who came into the match second in the CAA in total corner kicks, to just one corner on the afternoon.
The Phoenix wraps up the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va., versus James Madison.
