GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former Elon football and baseball standout Joey Hackett will be one of 12 people inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in September.
As a tight end on the football field at Elon, Hackett caught 72 passes for 1,164 yards and seven touchdowns between 1979-80. In 1980, he led the team with 452 receiving yards on 26 receptions. Hackett scored four touchdowns that season as he helped Elon capture its first NAIA National Championship. Hackett went on to play professional football, first with the USFL's San Antonio Gunslingers where he caught 63 passes for eight touchdowns in two seasons. He later played with the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers. As a member of the Broncos, Hackett appeared in Super Bowl XXI.
Hackett was also a star on the baseball diamond at Elon. In 1981 he was a second-team NAIA All-American as well as an all-district and all-conference performer. The previous season he collected all-league and All-Carolinas Conference Tournament honors. He led the team in both home runs and runs scored in 1980 and 1981 and paced the squad in RBI in 1980. The 17 homers he belted in 1981 continue to rank in a tie for the seventh-most ever hit in a season by an Elon player. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 34th round in 1980 and in the fourth round by the Texas Rangers in 1981.
Hackett, and the rest of the 2014 class of the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame, will be inducted at a banquet at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex on Monday, September 15. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the
Greensboro Sports Commission's web site.
