ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's soccer team opened the year with a 2-0 exhibition win over the Liberty Flames on Friday night, Aug. 15, at Rudd Field. A pair of second half goals by
Sarah Henson (54') and
Susannah Anderson (85') paved the way for the Phoenix in its first of two exhibition games this weekend.
Â
The best scoring chance for either squad happened in the 40th minute on a
Marissa Russo strike from 15 yards away. However, Russo's shot landed in the hands of Tori Collard who made a great diving save to her right to keep the match scoreless.
Â
The Flames held a 4-2 edge in shots in the opening frame, but both squads put just one shot on target.
Â
Henson put the Phoenix up 1-0 in the 54th minute after knocking in a
Bethany Houpt headed pass from the left post to make it a 1-0 game.
Â
In the 85th minute, Anderson scored on a great through ball from
Julie Hibberd to give the maroon and gold some late insurance and a 2-0 lead.
Â
Elon ended the match with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Elon's final preseason tune-up is Sunday night, Aug. 17, at 7:30 p.m. against Catawba.
