ELON, N.C. – With just two weeks remaining until Elon football opens its 2015 season at Wake Forest, freshman wide receiver
Corey Joyner took some time to talk about his transition to college and preseason camp.
On how collegiate preseason camp differs from high school:
"For me, it's a whole different world. It's much more mental. I think physically I knew what it was going to be going into it. I tried to take care of my body with ice baths and stuff like that. But mentally, it's a totally different world. It's a lot faster, there's a whole lot to learn. I played corner too. I like being able to focus on one position. It's a little bit easier on the mind, but it's still hard. There's a lot more decision making."
On his decision to enroll early:
"I think it was the best decision I ever made. I knew the basic plays; of course we added a lot of things in camp. I had the foundation from the spring and I didn't have that nervous feeling as much coming in because I knew the guys and the coaches. I felt much more at home which made it a lot easier."
On having two other players also enroll early:
"I think if I didn't have
Josh Ramseur and
Daniel Thompson it would have been a lot harder on me. Coming in early, people have their groups on the team. Having those guys made it easier. I became real close to them and it made it easier for me to talk to everybody else. Now I really feel like I'm part of the family."
On the young wide receivers and having a chance to produce early:
"I just have to produce early. I want to be able play, and I want to play a lot. I'm sure every other guy wants to be able to do the same. I'm just trying to make every opportunity I have the best and just make a good impression so I can get out there and produce for the team."
On the receiving group:
"
Demetrius Oliver is probably one of the most athletic guys on the team and can bring that big-play aspect.
Tereak McCray, a freshman like me, is quicker and we sort of resemble each other.
Josh Ramseur is a big guy. He can go up and get it. Lichota (Seidewand) plays everything for us. He can pretty much do anything.
Jon Thomas can be a big play guy.
Tre Lennon is someone I look up to. He helped me when I came in the spring and someone that helps me with footwork. He's someone the team can depend on."
On what he wants to focus on leading up to the opener at Wake Forest:
"Just remembering my fundamentals. Looking at it on film and saying you're going to do it is different than actually going on the field and doing it. Once you go out on the field you have to remember your footwork, I have to make this cut or wrap around or go underneath. That's something I'm really working on."
