ELON, N.C. – Riding its best start in nearly nine years, the Elon University men's soccer team hosts its 2015 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a contest versus Davidson. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on the Phoenix's home pitch at Rudd Field.

Series HistorySaturday's match marks the 14
th all-time meeting between the two former conference and in-state rivals. Elon holds an 11-2 advantage over Davidson in a series that dates back to 2003 and has won the last three meetings. The two programs last met in 2013 with the Phoenix prevailing with a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Davidson on a golden goal by
Caue Da Silva.
About ElonElon is 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006. The maroon and gold defeated North Florida, 5-2, in its most recent contest last Sunday, Sept. 6, in its finale at the UNCW Courtyard at Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic. The two goals conceded were the first given on the year by the Phoenix who had opened the year with a clean sheet in its first 301 minutes of the season.
The five goals is a season-high for Elon, who has 12 overall as a team in its first four games compared to only four goals at the same stretch last season. Six different players have found the back of the net for the Phoenix with Da Silva pacing the squad with three. Three other players have tallied two goals in seniors
Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler,
James Brace and
Eduardo Alvarez.
The Phoenix defense has been stout in the early portion of the year with three clean sheets in the first four games. Elon is holding the opposition to a .040 shot percentage despite being outshot by opponents 50-43 on the year. Redshirt freshman keeper
Matthew Jegier has played every minute between the posts in his first year as the starter and was rewarded as the CAA Rookie of the Week on Aug. 31. The Charlotte, N.C., native boasts a .875 save percentage and has a 0.50 goals-against average with 14 saves.
Scouting Davidson (2-0-1)Davidson also arrives to Elon with an unbeaten record to start the season with a 2-0-1 record. The Wildcats are coming off a 2-1 win over NC State in its most recent match on Monday, Sept. 7. Last season, Davidson started the year 5-0-2, its best start since 1982, en route to a 10-2-6 record.
Davidson has posted six goals on the year by six different players. Alec Rotunda, who tallied a score in the contest versus the Wolfpack, is tied for the team-lead in points overall with three along with Valeriy Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell.
Defensively, the Wildcats are allowing 12.7 shots per match and 1.33 goals a contest. Opponents are also shooting .421 percent in shots on target against Davidson. Netminder Matt Pacifici has manned all 290 minutes between the posts and has a 1.24 goals-against average while corralling 12 saves.
Up NextElon heads to Winston-Salem, N.C., for its first true road contest of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at No. 14 Wake Forest. That match is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
