Tribe Downs Phoenix in Series Finale

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team was unable to pick up a series win in its first Colonial Athletic Association set of the year as the William & Mary Tribe took the rubber match of the three-game series by a 14-7 margin at Latham Park on Sunday afternoon.

Kory Shumate went 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI, while Nick Zammarelli was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI to pace the Elon (9-11, 1-2 CAA) offense.

William & Mary (9-11, 2-1) saw Hunter Smith go 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI and Charley Gould homer in a 2-for-6 day at the plate.

Nick Beaulac (0-4) took the loss as he was charged with five runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Tribe starter Nick Brown (2-3) won after allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Brown struck out six. Joseph Gaouette threw the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save.

How It Happened: Elon took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Shumate tripled and scored on a Kyle Jackson sacrifice fly only to see William & Mary even the score on a double steal in the second.

The Tribe grabbed the lead for good with a four-run third. Gould's fielder's choice with the bases loaded erased one runner, but allowed the go-ahead run to score. After a walk loaded the bases back up, a wild pitch scored the second run of the inning to make it a 3-1 game. A sacrifice fly and infield single would score two more runs in the frame as William & Mary built a 5-1 advantage.

Both teams scored twice in the fifth, including two Phoenix runs on a Zammarelli double down the left field line, before Elon closed the gap to just a run at 7-6 in the last of the sixth. Brett Guba and Austin Leeney started it off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt, CJ Young tripled home two and then scored on a Shumate ground out to get the maroon and gold within one.

The Tribe came right back with two in the seventh, including one on Charley Gould's leadoff homer.

Notes: Tyler McVicar went 0-for-5 to snap his multi-hit streak at seven games... Elon was just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

On Deck: Elon will play host to the High Point Panthers in a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 22.
