Phoenix Drops Mid-Week Tilt to High Point

ELON, N.C. – One big inning was all it took for the Elon University baseball team to end up on the wrong side of an 8-2 decision against the visiting High Point Panthers on Tuesday, March 22.

Elon (9-12) got two hits from Kyle Jackson, while Nick Zammarelli picked up the lone Phoenix RBI of the night.

High Point (16-5) saw Carson Jackson go 3-for-5 with a grand slam to pace its offensive attack.

Making his first start this season, Elon's Michael Elefante (0-1) was charged with four runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Cooper Jeffers (2-0) allowed one unearned run on three hits in 6.0 innings to garner the victory. Michael Hennessey gave up one run on four hits over the final 3.0 innings to pick up his first save of the year.

How It Happened: High Point made its push with the game deadlocked at one in the fifth inning. With one out, Drew Fopeano singled before the next two hitters walked to load the bases. At that point, the Phoenix went to the bullpen. Chris Clare greeted the new Elon hurler with a two-RBI single down the left field line to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage. After another walk reloaded the bases, Dominic Fazio singled home one. Jackson then sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left to complete the seven-run outburst that put High Point on top by an 8-1 margin.

The Panthers were the first to score in the game, plating one in the second after an Elon outfielder slipped, allowing the batter to reach on a triple. The next hitter lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Elon would tie it up in the last of the third when Austin Leeney scored from third on a High Point error.

Elon would get its final marker in the eighth when Zammarelli singled home Jackson.

Notes: Elon stranded 10 runners and was just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position... Tyler Manez had the rare four-strikeout inning in the top of the eighth and has now struck out seven hitters in 2.1 innings of work this season... Kory Shumate was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-long eight games.

On Deck: Elon will hit the road for a CAA series at UNC Wilmington this weekend. Game one is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, March 25.
