ELON, N.C. – Having not played a game in just over a week, the rust showed for the Elon University baseball team as the Phoenix dropped a 16-4 decision to the Richmond Spiders at Latham Park to snap a 10-game home winning streak.
Following the game, the Phoenix players shaved their heads for the program's annual fundraiser for the
Vs. Cancer Foundation. This year, Elon has raised over $42,000 for the foundation to fight pediatric cancer.
Elon (25-26) got two of its five hits from
Kyle Jackson (2-for-5). Jackson also drove in one. Four of Elon's five hits were doubles.
Tyler Beckwith hit two grand slams in a 3-for-6 night for Richmond (27-24).
How It Happened: Richmond grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a ground out and then extended the lead to 4-0 later in the frame when D.J. Lee hit a three-run home run to right-center.
Elon got one back on a bases-loaded walk to
Ryne Ogren in the bottom half of the inning.
The Spiders would pull away in the fourth, scoring six runs on just one hit and six walks. Four of the runs came on Beckwith's first grand slam of the night.
Beckwith would hit his second of the game in the ninth to make it a 16-1 game.
The Phoenix got three in its final at bat. The first two scored on a
Danny Lynch double. Lynch then came home on Jackson's single.
Notes: Nick Zammarelli doubled in the first inning to give him 22 doubles on the season, a number that ranks as the second-highest single-season mark in program history...
Tyler McVicar doubled in the seventh to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 23 games... Zammarelli has reached safely in 21 contests, Ogren in 20 and
Liam O'Regan 13.
On Deck: Elon will hold its Senior Day festivities prior to Friday's 4 p.m. first pitch against the Spiders.
