ELON, N.C. – The Elon University football team began its move in to preparations for next weekend's season opener against Gardner-Webb by holding a situational scrimmage in Rhodes Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Tickets can be purchased through the Elon ticket office at 336-278-6750 or online.
Following the workout, head coach
Rich Skrosky provided his thoughts on the Phoenix's preseason camp.
On camp winding down and today's work:
"We will have two more practices tomorrow. Today was really that situational day that we've done for a long time. It really went well. We covered about 41 different scenarios – from some things that I've never had happen in 30 years, to some things that take place a little more regularly. The best thing about the kids was that they executed for the most part. They were really locked in and had a good attitude doing it. I really liked their demeanor as we went through the day."
On the growth of the team from last year:
"I think in the overall maturity of the program. They know the expectations and the practice tempo. We actually practiced less total time this camp than the last, but if you ask every kid here they will tell you that this was a harder camp. What that says to me, is that they are straining more, we're getting more out of them as a coaching staff and they know the bar is high. I know we're better than we were a year ago."
On moving in to game week preparations:
"It's exciting. We haven't had our first game at home since 2009. Gardner-Webb is someone that we've played a lot of games with historically. We'll approach it as a normal game week. Classes start this week so we have to get our mindset right. Our full team has to understand the sense of urgency that we have. Each one of the 97 guys has a role. That's another step. I know Gardner-Webb is a tough, physical team that can run the ball well. It sounds like they added some late admits. In the first game, there's always a little bit of that unknown. We're going to take care of ourselves and make sure that we go in to the game as prepared as we can be."
