ELON, N.C. – Every Monday, Phoenix fans can get a look at the week ahead with our "Elon Athletics Weekly Update" feature when we will preview all the week's upcoming events for our sports teams.
 
Football (5-1, 3-0 CAA)

Not in competition this week
• The Phoenix extended its longest winning streak since 2009 to five games with a 25-17 victory over William & Mary in front of a Family Weekend crowd of 10,137 on Saturday, Oct. 7.
• With two rushing touchdowns against the Tribe, Malcolm Summers now has scored six of his 10 career rushing touchdowns against William & Mary.
• The Elon defense recorded seven sacks, including two each from Dondre Howell and Marcus Willoughby, against William & Mary. It was the most sacks by an Elon defense since posting eight in a 2009 win over Georgia Southern.
 
Cross Country
Elon at HPU VertCross Invitational | Friday, Oct. 13 | 4 p.m. | Kernersville, N.C.
Elon at NCAA Pre-Nationals | Saturday, Oct. 14 | 10 a.m. | Louisville, Ky.
• The Phoenix will split for a pair of meets this week with a group competing at the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point on Friday, Oct. 13, and select members traveling to the NCAA Pre-Nationals the following day in Louisville, Ky.
• Senior Brigid Brennan earned her first-career league weekly award last week, as the Northport, N.Y., native was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Brennan clocked the second-fastest time in school history in the 6K with her time of 20:53 at the Paul Short Run on Sept. 29, just two seconds shy of the program's personal-best.
• This week's meets will be the last for the cross country programs prior to Elon hosting the 2017 CAA Cross Country Championships on Oct. 28. It will be the second time overall that Elon will host a conference meet on its home course with the last coming in 2009 when the Phoenix hosted the Southern Conference Championships.
 
Men's Golf
Elon vs. Phoenix Invitational | Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 16-17 | Burlington, N.C.
• Elon had a strong showing in the final two rounds of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate last week, earning a second-place finish at the tournament hosted by Western Carolina.
• William Harwood made seven birdies over the final two rounds to finish tied for 10th with a one over-par 214 for the tournament, the fourth Top 10 finish for the sophomore in his career. The Phoenix also had four competitors finish in the Top 15 individually.
• Elon returns to the links next week, Oct. 16-17, to host the Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C. The tournament will begin with two rounds on Monday, Oct. 16, followed by the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

• After a week away from competition, the Phoenix returns to the pitch Wednesday, Oct. 11, with a match at William & Mary before hosting Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 14.
• Elon fell to No. 19 Duke, 1-0, in its most recent contest last Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils marked the third ranked team the Phoenix has faced thus far in 2017 and the second from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
• The Phoenix continues its stellar play defensively, ranking among the top programs in the country in a number of categories. Elon has allowed one goal or fewer to the opposition in 18 of its last 20 matches played dating back to last season. Redshirt-junior keeper Matthew Jegier is also two clean sheets shy of tying Nathan Dean's '14 all-time career program-record of 25 shutouts. 
 
Men's Tennis
Elon at ITA Carolina Regionals | Friday-Monday, Oct. 13-17 | Cary, N.C.
• Elon men's tennis players last competed in two events - the Elon Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. - from Sept. 21-24. 
• Neal Port won the Powell Singles draw of the Elon Invitational by beating Will Bissett of East Carolina in straight sets in the title match. Louis Rico also had a stellar weekend in reaching the final of the Phoenix Singles draw while Salvador Mijares took the Maroon Singles consolation bracket. 
• Felipe Sarrasague competed at the Oracle ITA Masters and won his first match over Luca Sucevic of St. John's before falling to Victor Pham of Columbia in the Round of 16. Pham went on to the title match of the event, but fell to second-seeded Brandon Holt of Southern California. 
• The Phoenix will be back in action this week at the ITA Carolina Regionals, which will be held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
 
Women's Golf
Elon at Pinehurst Challenge | Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 9-10 | Pinehurst, N.C.
• The women's golf team will play its third of four fall tournaments by participating in the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by College of Charleston this week.
• Along with CofC, the 19-team field includes fellow CAA programs James Madison, Towson and William & Mary.
• In its last event, the Phoenix placed fifth at the Boston College Intercollegiate, where Heather Munro paced the squad with a second-place showing.
 
Women's Soccer (8-4-4, 1-2-3 CAA)

• The Phoenix picked up two crucial points in league play at Rudd Field against William & Mary and CAA preseason favorite and reigning league champion Northeastern last week with a 2-2 draw against the Tribe and 3-3 tie against the Huskies.
• Meredith Christopher scored two goals and added two assists for the Phoenix during the week. She is currently first in the CAA in total points (22), leads the league in assists (8) and is second in goals (7) with three matches remaining on the regular season.
• Elon, currently tied for fifth in the league standings, travels to league-leader Hofstra for its lone CAA match this week on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 12:30 p.m. 
 
Women's Tennis
Not in competition this week
• The Phoenix wrapped up its second tournament of the fall season over the weekend, Oct. 6-8, at the Wake Forest Invitational.
• Suzanne Zenoni led the way with a 2-1 mark in singles action, placing third in the B1 singles flight.
• Elon returns to the courts for the ITA Carolina Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C., Thursday-Monday, Oct. 19-23, at the University of North Carolina.
 
Volleyball (13-8, 2-4 CAA)

• Elon returns home after three matches on the road last week to battle College of Charleston and UNCW inside Alumni Gym on Friday, Oct. 13, and Sunday, Oct. 15, respectively. 
• The Phoenix took down North Carolina Central in three sets on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Durham, N.C., before falling to Hofstra in three sets and Northeastern in a five-set showdown. 
• With 24 digs over the course of the two matches this weekend, Sydney Busa will become the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs in a career. She would join the likes of Debbie Hall, Fiona MacPherson and Katie Ruoff.
