#3 North Carolina Tops Elon

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With a light rain falling for much of the game, the Elon University baseball team suffered an 11-2 setback at third-ranked North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday night.

Elon (19-22) saw Hayden Platt record two of the team's five hits, while Kyle Jackson hit his ninth home run of the season.

North Carolina (32-9) was led by Brian Miller who was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI and Brandon Riley who homered and drove in three during a 2-for-4 night.

In his third start of the season, Owen Lorenz (0-3) took the loss. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 3.0 innings of work. Lorenz struck out four.

Trevor Gay (1-0) garnered the win after tossing one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

How It Happened: The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Miller led off with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. After Miller swiped third and Ashton McGee walked to put runners on the corners, Riley who hit his fourth home run of the season to right-center to make it a 3-0 game.

Elon quickly got one run back as Jackson led off the second by sending the first pitch of the inning over the wall in left.

North Carolina added three runs with two down in the second to go up 6-1, scoring on a Miller single, Logan Warmoth triple and a McGee infield single.

With runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, Platt lined a single to right-center to score the second Phoenix marker of the game. Elon would threaten for more after a two-out walk loaded the bases, but a ground ball ended the threat.

The Tar Heels put up two more in both the fourth and fifth innings before adding a single marker in the sixth.

Notes: Elon, which had picked off just three runners all season, picked off two runners on Tuesday night... With UNC ranked third in the nation, it marked the highest-rated opponent for the Phoenix since an April 17, 2013 date at the top-rated Tar Heels... Ryne Ogren made his first career pitching appearance, throwing a perfect eighth and striking out one.

On Deck: Elon will return to CAA play with a three-game series at College of Charleston this weekend. The set is scheduled to open with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, April 28.
