ELON, N.C. – Leading up to the start of the 2017 Elon University football season, we will provide a position preview. We begin that series by looking at the Phoenix's quarterbacks who will be tutored by offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
Drew Folmar.
Heading in to the 2016 season, Elon saw
Connor Christiansen win the starting quarterback job, but he would be injured in the first game of the season against Gardner-Webb. Then-sophomore
Daniel Thompson took over the reigns at quarterback and would complete 161 of his 297 passes for 1,567 yards and four touchdowns.
Under the leadership of new head coach
Curt Cignetti, Christiansen transitioned to defensive back during spring practice. Spring also saw two incoming freshmen enroll early as both
Davis Cheek and
Jalen Greene competed during spring ball.
Cheek and Greene come to Elon with impressive prep credentials. Cheek was a two-time all-conference pick at Butler High School and threw for over 3,000 yards during his senior campaign. Greene was the 2016 Big 8 Offensive Player of the year and an all-conference selection after passing for 2,516 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior. Greene also rushed for 475 yards and five touchdowns last year.
A pair of red-shirt freshmen in
Mark McGuire and
Seth Harrell complete the quarterbacks on the 2017 roster.
Elon will look for Folmar's coaching to help one of these quarterbacks improve on the position's 2016 numbers when the Phoenix threw for 1,701 yards and four touchdowns, but also threw 10 interceptions. The Phoenix averaged 154.6 yards through the air last year.
