ELON, N.C. – Leading up to the start of the 2017 Elon University football season, we will provide position previews. This week we take a look at the wide receivers and tight ends that will be mentored by
Mike Shanahan (WR) and
Cris Reisert (TE).
A year ago, Elon's group of wide receivers and tight ends battled numerous injuries and looked to young players for production. The Phoenix tallied 1,701 receiving yards with four touchdowns over 11 games in 2016.
Limited to action in just five games a year ago, junior
Corey Joyner is the leading returning receiver as he caught 26 passes for 282 yards, an average of 10.8 yards per reception.
Joyner is likely to be joined in the starting set by junior
Tereak McCray and sophomore
Cole Taylor. McCray, who also missed time with injuries last year, caught four passes for 39 yards in two appearances, while Taylor snared 25 balls for 222 yards as a true freshman. Taylor, who scored his lone touchdown in Elon's win at #8 William & Mary, played in all 11 games and made seven starts last season.

At 6-4,
Tre Lennon,
Josh Ramseur and
Tre Marsh are the tallest among the receiving corps. Lennon finished with eight catches for 77 yards in his junior campaign, while Ramseur had six receptions for 50 yards as a red-shirt freshman. Marsh saw time in three games as a red-shirt freshman in 2016.Â
Also back are sophomore
Trevor Cowley and red-shirt freshman
Bijan Emami.
John Luke Arrington started the first eight games of the 2016 season at tight end before an injury ended his season. As a sophomore, Arrington finished with eight receptions for 69 yards. Arrington will enter the preseason atop the depth chart at the position.
Sophomore
Matt Foster appeared in all 11 games and made five starts at tight end last year. Foster gained 41 yards on six catches as a true freshman.
Sophomore
Connor Heger and red-shirt freshman
Alex Parker also return for the 2017 campaign. Former defensive lineman
Mike Aiello, a red-shirt freshman, will transition to tight end.
Head coach
Curt Cignetti added one receiver in the 2017 signing class in
Kortez Weeks. Weeks was an all-conference and all-county player who had 68 receptions for 1,500 yards and scored 21 touchdowns during his senior prep season. The roster also saw the addition of one new tight end as red-shirt freshman
Chris Rowe transferred to Elon from Charleston Southern. As a prep, Rowe was an all-conference performer.
With a healthy group in 2017, Elon's skilled and experienced wide receivers and tight ends are expected to perform at a higher rate.
