ELON, N.C. – Elon University volleyball will take part in its final non-conference tournament of the 2017 season this weekend when it plays in the Tussle in the Triad, which is co-hosted between Elon, UNCG and High Point. Elon will welcome Navy to Alumni Gym on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. and will host UNCG at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, before traveling to High Point for a 7 p.m. match inside the Millis Center later in the day Saturday.
SCOUTING NAVY
The Mids are off to a stellar start to the 2017 season with a 9-1 record through the first 10 matches. Led by Maddi Sgattoni's 2.91 kills per set and 0.32 aces per set, Navy has won five matches in a row against Fort Wayne, Bradley, La Salle, Robert Morris and Penn. Its lone loss this season came Sept. 1 against Ball State. In the all-time series, Elon leads Navy 3-0 and has swept each of the last two matches against the Midshipmen.
SCOUTING UNCG
Saturday's match marks the 55th match between the Phoenix and Spartans to date. In the series, UNCG holds a 36-18 lead, but lost last time the two met on Sept. 3, 2016, when Elon defeated the Spartans 3-2 in Greensboro, N.C. Under fourth-year head coach Corey Carlin, UNCG is led by Allison Penner's 10.87 assists per set and Ashley Muench's 3.86 kills per set.
SCOUTING HIGH POINT
Elon and High Point will meet for the 65th time on Saturday night. High Point has won each four of the last five meetings between the two teams, but Elon won the previous four from Sept. 24, 2008, to Sept. 13, 2011. Elon's last win over High Point came during the 2014 season, a five-set win inside Alumni Gym. Haley Barnes leads HPU with 2.82 kills per set and 0.46 aces per set. Jenna Smith paces the Panthers with 7.54 assists per set.
LAST TIME OUT
Elon swept the Phoenix Classic against Charleston Southern, North Carolina Central and Norfolk State on Sept. 8 and 9 to push its winning streak to five in a row.
Kam Terry was named the tournament MVP and went on to earn CAA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 11, after having a .315 hitting percentage over the course of the weekend. During Elon's winning streak, Elon has dropped just two sets - one to Liberty and one to NC Central - and has won 15 of its last 17 sets played.
A PROGRAM MILESTONE
Friday night's match against Navy marks the 1,500th all-time match for Elon volleyball. It also marks the 600th Division I match the program will play.
SOLID START FOR THE SENIOR
Busa leads the CAA in kills (183) kills per set (4.57), points (200) and points per set (5.00) through 11 matches this season. The senior from Leesburg, Va., has been named to all three All-Tournament teams Elon has played in this season and has posted seven double-doubles in those matches. Entering the year, Busa had never averaged more than 2.82 kills per set in a season or 2.71 digs per set. Through the early going in 2017, she's nearly two kills and more than one dig per set over her previous season highs, both recorded in 2016.
BUSA'S CANNON
Busa surpassed the 1,000-career kill mark during the third set of Elon's 3-1 win over NC Central on Saturday, Sept. 9. To date, she has 1,026 kills in maroon in gold and is in great position to crack the program's Top 10 list for most in a career and the Top 5 list for most since Elon transitioned to Division I.
JAUDON'S MILESTONE
Junior libero
Maddie Jaudon surpassed the 1,000-career dig mark at the Liberty Invitational. She now has 1,076 digs in her career, which stands four short of cracking the Top 10 in Elon's program history. In 263 sets played, Jaudon is averaging 4.09 digs per set in her career. That has come over the course of 71 matches with the Phoenix. The program record for most digs in a career is held by Debbie Hall, who recorded 2,036 digs from 1992-95.
HEY ROOKIE!
First-year setter
Kodi Garcia stepped in as Elon's starting setter on opening weekend and has made the most of the opportunity. To date, she has 426 assists in 40 sets and stands third in the CAA for assists per set at 10.65 behind Luisa Sydlik of Hofstra (11.55 per set) and Allison Beckman of College of Charleston (11.44 per set). She has earned four double-doubles in Elon's first 11 matches, the latest coming with 29 assists and 11 digs in the three-set win over Charleston Southern in the Phoenix Classic. For her performance on opening weekend in Charlotte, where she had 123 assists (10.25 per set) and 26 digs, she was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday, Aug. 28.
PRESEASON HONOR AND POLL
Busa was named a Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention before the start of the 2017 season. It marks the second time in her career she's earned the honor. The recognition follows her 2016 Third Team All-CAA nod at season's end. Announced the same day as Busa's preseason honor, Elon was selected to finish eighth in the CAA this year. College of Charleston was picked to win the league with six first-place votes and Hofstra followed closely with three first-place votes.
HOME SWEET HOME
After playing seven of the first eight matches of the season away from Alumni Gym, Elon came home for the Phoenix Classic last weekend to start a run in which nine of the next 10 matches are in Alumni Gym. The only road match comes this weekend against High Point. The lengthy run of home matches also encompasses the start of CAA play, when Elon will host Towson, Delaware, James Madison and William & Mary at the end of September before heading back out on the road to start the month of October.
HEAD COACH MARY TENDLER
Elon head coach
Mary Tendler is in her 15th season at the helm of the program. After winning her 200th match as the team's leader last season, she holds a 224-242 record to date with the Phoenix since the start of the 2003 season.
A BID FAREWELL TO ALUMNI GYM
The 2017 season marks the 46th and final campaign for the volleyball program in Alumni Gym, with the team set to move its home matches to the Schar Center in 2018. The 5,400-seat convocation center is currently under construction and will host the volleyball program, as well as the men's and women's basketball programs, beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Elon will open its fourth season in Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday, Sept. 22, with a 7 p.m. match against Towson. The following day on Saturday, Sept. 23, Elon will take on Delaware, also at 7 p.m.
