ELON, N.C. – Elon University football senior running back
Malcolm Summers was named CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week and CFPA National Performer of the Week honorable mention Monday, Oct. 8, while first-year linebacker
Zack Monson was named CAA Rookie of the Week by the league office.

Summers earned the two honors after rushing for 186 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown in Elon's 27-24 victory at No. 2 James Madison on Saturday, Oct. 6. The senior from Mebane, N.C., leads the CAA in rushing with 118.4 yards per game over the course of Elon's five games. In all, his 592 yards on the ground is the second-most in the league. It trails Stony Brook's Jordan Gowins, who has run for 596 yards in six games for the Seawolves. Entering Saturday's game, James Madison had been allowing its opponents an average of 78.4 yards per game on the ground, which ranked seventh in FCS football. His 186 yards marks the third-most in a game this season by a CAA running back. During the game, Summers broke a career-long 59-yard touchdown run to mark the longest rushing touchdown for the Phoenix since Ronnie Dargan ran one 65 yards to the house on Sept. 9, 2004, against Wofford.Â
Â
Monson earned his first-career start Saturday against the Dukes and made the most of the opportunity, making a team-high 12 tackles with seven solo stops on the day to set early season highs. He also finished with 2.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 12-tackle day topped his previous season best of four last week against New Hampshire.
Â
With a 4-1 overall record and a 2-0 conference mark, Elon will complete a stretch in which it plays four of its first six games away from home on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Delaware. Kickoff against the Blue Hens is set for 3:30 p.m. Delaware is the only CAA team Elon has not defeated since it joined the league in 2014. The two teams have met twice since it joined the conference with UD winning 34-24 in 2014 and 14-10 in 2015.
