Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Falls at William & Mary in Overtime, 2-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon University men's soccer team fell victims to a free kick golden goal in the 99th minute of overtime to fall to William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association road match on Wednesday evening, Oct. 9, at the Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.

Elon went to 3-7-1 overall on the season with the setback and 0-5 in the CAA. The Tribe moved to 4-4-2 and 2-1-1 in the CAA with their fourth straight win overall.

The Rundown
Elon earned the opening stanza lead inside the 34th minute off the foot of rookie Burl Shepherd. The Highland Village, Texas, native took a feed from Mattias Cooper near the top of the 18-yard area and fired a blast inside the right post for his team-best fourth goal of the year.

The Phoenix went into the half with the 5-3 edge in total shots. The maroon and gold also blanked the Tribe in corner kicks 3-0.

William & Mary came back to level the match inside the 67th minute. The Tribe's Alfredo Bozalongo scored his first of the season and tied the match at 1-1.

The match would end up going into overtime between the two teams, the second straight time in the series the programs have played an extra session.

Elon had a great look for the golden goal early into the overtime period. John Walden played a cross to Tuki Tayali, who was able to get a shot past the keeper, but his attempt hit the top of the crossbar before falling out of play in the 92nd minute.

The Phoenix continued to defend hard as the first overtime period trickled down to less than a minute remaining. The Tribe raced up the field near the top of its circle and was able to draw a foul with just 12 seconds left in overtime to set up a free kick. Bozalongo took the assignment and was able to earn the brace with a kick into the upper left corner to give the Tribe the golden goal win.

Elon ended the match with a 13-11 advantage in total shots with both squads having four on target. The Phoenix also won the corner kick battle, 4-3.
