Elon, N.C.- The Elon University women's basketball team suffered a 76-46 loss against the UNC Tar Heels on Friday night, Nov. 22.
Jada Graves and
Brie Perpignan tied for team best in points (9), with Graves also grabbing seven boards, two steals, and one block.
Ariana Nance also added a season-high seven points.
North Carolina's Malu Tshitenge finished with a double-double, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels.
THE RUNDOWN
After Graves scored the first two points of the game, the Tar Heels went on a 6-0 run to give UNC a four-point lead (6-2) with 6:11 left in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets through the remainder of the quarter, and the Tar Heels held a five-point advantage going into the second at 13-5.
The back-and-forth scoring continued for the remainder of the half. With 4:54 on the clock, a pair of free throws from Nance started a 9-9 scoring period between the two teams. Other players that scored for Elon included Perpignan,
Duru Tasman, and Ariel Colón. Before heading into the locker room, UNC went on a 4-0 run to increase the lead to 15 (36-21). Graves finished the half with five points, while Perpignan and Nance tallied four points apiece.
The Tar Heels held on to their momentum for the second half. At the 6:05 mark in the third, UNC began a 10-0 run, which was snapped by a three ball from
Jaylin Powell. After three more points were added to the Tar Heels' score, Powell hit another from beyond the arc to make the score 55-33 (1:11). The quarter closed out with each team making a pair of free throws and a North Carolina jumper at the buzzer (59-35).
Following a 7-0 run by the Tar Heels, the Phoenix answered with a 6-0 run to start the fourth (66-40, 6:45). Over the next three minutes, only one UNC field goal was scored. But the Tar Heels went on an 8-6 run as time expired to win the contest.
NOTES
-The Phoenix now hold a 2-2 record on the season.
-Elon forced 12 UNC turnovers, which lead to 10 points for the Phoenix.
-From the field, Elon shot 25.5%. The team made 13 of their 51 attempts.
-Through the first four games of the season, Graves and Perpignan lead the team in points per game (9.5).

The Phoenix will be back in Schar Center when it hosts Wake Forest in its final home game of the 2019 calendar year. The matchup is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
