HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Elon University volleyball's season came to a close as the Phoenix dropped its CAA Championship semifinal match 3-1 to Towson Saturday, Nov. 23 at Hofstra's David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
"I am so proud of this team for how they competed during the CAA Championships," said head coach
Mary Tendler. "You could tell by how they played, they were not satisfied just making the tournament. Even against the top seed today, they never backed down. This is a great stepping stone for our young team and it is exciting to think about what we could accomplish in the future."
The maroon and gold finish 2019 at 14-18 overall.
Towson 3, Elon 1 | 25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 19-25
THE RUNDOWN
Elon was hot out of the gate as the Phoenix jumped out to an 8-1 lead thanks to strong play at the net by
Leah Daniel,
Jenn Krzeminski, and
Haylie Clark. A pair of
Kellyn Trowse kills and one from
Alex VanWestrienen extended the advantage to 14-6. Towson finally strung together a 4-0 run of its own to get to 20-18, but Elon refused to give up the set. After a
Julia Crabtree score and a Towson attack error,
Kodi Garcia set up Daniel for the kill and the 1-0 match lead.
The Tigers woke up after that, though. In set two, the regular-season champions took over with a 6-1 swing that put them in front, 11-7. Elon stuck around as a Daniel point got the Phoenix within two at 17-15, but pulled away with a 7-2 run. The stretch helped Towson to a 25-18 decision that knotted the match at a set apiece. The top seed continued its strong play in the third set, as a 9-1 push was too much for Elon to overcome. Towson claimed a 25-18 result and the overall lead, 2-1.
In set four, a pair of Daniel service aces highlighted a 4-0 run that trimmed the Tiger lead, 16-14. Later, a kill from Clark and a block by Trowse and Krzeminski narrowed the divide by three points at 20-17. However, Towson went off for another four unanswered points and secured a 25-19 final to advance to the Championship final.
HIGHLIGHTS
Offensively, Daniel paced the attack with 16 kills, a pair of service aces, and a .289 hitting percentage.
