ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's lacrosse dropped its home opener by the final score of 11-4 to 14th-ranked Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Rudd Field.

THE RUNDOWN
UVA (2-0) opened the afternoon scoring the game's first three goals to bring an Elon (1-1) timeout. Out of the break,
Quinn Daly won the draw control and
Mae McGlynn tallied to end the Cavalier run out of the gate.

Though Virginia added one more with 21:27 to go in the opening half, Elon's defense settled in and held the Cavaliers off the board for more than 15 minutes to keep it a 4-1 game with less than seven minutes to go before halftime. But after Virginia scored its fifth goal, it tallied two more in a span of 76 seconds to take a 7-1 lead to halftime.

Out of the break, two early goals were all UVA could muster against the Elon defense before the Phoenix again settled in and kept the Cavaliers from scoring for a span of 22 minutes while adding two of its own with
Kaley Thompson scoring her third of the season and McGlynn her second of the game to bring the lead to just six at 9-3 with 5:59 to play. But down the stretch, UVA added two more goals in a span of 60 seconds to seal the 11-4 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
McGlynn highlighted Elon's scoring with three of the team's four goals. Thompson's day concluded with the one goal while picking up three ground balls and three draw controls. Both Daly and
Paulina DiFatta led the team with four ground balls apiece with Daly also leading Elon with two caused turnovers.
Gillian Curran matched Thompson for the team high with three draw controls.

Virginia was led by three goals from Ashlyn McGovern to go with two apiece from Avery Shoemaker, Annie Dyson and Nora Bowen. Dyson also added two assists and four draw controls on the day and Maggie Jackson led the team with five points on a goal and four assists. Allison Shields led the team with four ground balls and Sammy Mueller picked up four draw controls.

NOTES
-Saturday's game marked the first visit to Elon for Virginia.
-With 10 saves on the day,
Paulina DiFatta has now made double-digit stops in each of her first two games with the program.
-Though falling 11-4, Elon and UVA matched each other in the draw circle with UVA holding a slight 9-8 advantage in the end.
