ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's soccer is set to take part in a global experience as it travels to Costa Rica from March 23-30 while exploring and learning about the native culture and history of the country.
The women's soccer team, along with the Elon football team, the men's soccer team and men's cross country squad, become the latest Elon University athletic programs to travel abroad as a part of the Elon Commitment to diversity and global engagement for its students. The teams will complete their learning requirement visiting several cities, which include San Jose, Quepos, Manuel Antonio and Jaco Town during their eight-day trip.
"Elon University is committed to providing the best student-athlete experience possible," said head coach
Neil Payne. "Our team trip to Costa Rica is proof of this commitment, as it combines a global learning opportunity with a unique soccer experience. We understand how fortunate we are to take this once-in-a-lifetime adventure and it is one our players will never forget."
The student-athletes are taking the class, "Global Explorations: Worldwide Wellness". The course challenges them to critically evaluate their own culture and biases and analyze the interconnectedness of global systems at a basic level. During the trip, they will examine fundamental intercultural principles, research specific historical and cultural sites to be visited, and explore the country's diverse geography, history, society and culture. They will also interact with locals in focused intercultural activities.
The Phoenix will also get to compete in two exhibition games during the trip. Elon will face the Costa Rican U20 National Team in Jacó Town and the A.D Moravia women's team in Quepos.
Keep up with daily updates from the trip with members of the team sharing experiences on social media. Journal updates from the student-athletes will also be posted during the trip on
