Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Phoenix Falls to Defending National Champion James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Falling behind the defending CAA and national champion in the opening 10 minutes, Elon University women's lacrosse dropped a 16-8 contest on the road Friday, April 19, to No. 9 James Madison in Elon's 100th game in program history.

THE RUNDOWN
Though keeping JMU (13-3, 5-0 CAA) off the board for the opening four minutes, the Dukes put five on the board in less than five minutes of game action to take a lead before Mae McGlynn could get Elon (4-11, 2-3 CAA) on the scoresheet with her 34th goal of the year. The McGlynn goal wasn't enough, though, to stop JMU with the Dukes adding three more to take an 8-1 lead with 8:48 to go in the opening half.

Scoring the last two goals ahead of halftime, Elon pulled within five at 8-3 at the break, but JMU pulled away again with a 4-0 run to go up 12-3 with 22:26 to go. Down the stretch, Elon put together two- and three-goal runs with the three-goal run coming in the final 13 minutes to pull within seven at 15-8, but the JMU lead was too large to overcome in the end.

HIGHLIGHTS
Cami Lynch, Kaley Thompson and Cate Mackel each scored twice to pace the Phoenix. Grace Simpson also recorded two assists on the day while McGlynn and Summer Larese rounded out Elon's scoring with a goal apiece. Thompson led the team with three draw controls with Gillian Curran and Quinn Daly picking up two apiece. In goal, Paige Brown made seven saves in relief of Paulina DiFatta. Friday's eight goals mark the most it has scored in six games against the Dukes to date.

JMU was led by Hanna Haven's four goals and two assists for six points. Maddie McDaniel also scored twice and had a game-high 11 draw controls with two caused turnovers. Two other Dukes scored twice apiece while Emma Johnson closed with three ground balls.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will close CAA regular-season action next weekend with a trip to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. Two days later on Sunday, April 28, Elon will host Coastal Carolina for Senior Day at Rudd Field.
