ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's soccer freshman forward
Bethany Harford has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday, Aug. 26, as announced by the conference office.
Harford collects her first CAA Rookie of the Week honor after leading Elon to a 1-0 win over Canisius on Thursday, Aug. 21. The goal came in overtime of the contest with the score knotted up at zero. In the 95
th minute, Harford positioned herself perfectly to receive a cross from
Hannah Doherty just inside the Griffins 18-yard box. From there, Harford took one touch and fired a rocket from the right side of the box, across her body, and into the upper left corner of the net. The play effectively ended the game and secured Elon's first victory of the season.
This marks the first time this season that Elon has earned a CAA Player of the Week Award. Earlier in the preseason, Doherty was named to the All-CAA Preseason Team for 2019-20.
Other awards handed out on Monday went to Emily Moxley of UNCW, who collected the CAA Offensive Player of the Week Award, and Kamryn Stablein of Delaware, who earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Phoenix returns to the pitch on Thursday, Aug. 29, when it travles to Radford, Va. for a matchup with the Highlanders. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
