WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- Although
Jaylin Powell paced the Phoenix with a career-high 21 points, the Elon University women's basketball team fell to William & Mary in its final road game of the regular season on Friday, Feb. 28, 74-61.
THE RUNDOWN
After the Phoenix went into halftime trailing by 12 (40-28), Elon chipped away at the Tribe lead to come within five points of William & Mary. With 7:19 left in the third quarter, Ariel Colón made a layup that ignited a 10-0 run to cut the William & Mary lead to six (44-38). The two teams then traded points, eventually leading to the five-point deficit (48-43). But the Tribe outscored Elon 26-18 in the remaining time of competition.
The Tribe opened the game with an 8-2 run, but a pair of layups from
Jaylin Powell and two free throws from
Saadia Munford tied the game (5:18). In the second half of the quarter, William & Mary outscored the Phoenix 15-4 to take an 11-point lead (23-12) going into the second quarter.
HIGHLIGHTS
-In addition to scoring a new personal best in single-game points, Powell finished the game shooting 7-of-9 from the field. She also tied
Jada Graves for the team high in rebounds.
Brie Perpignan followed Powell with 14 points and four assists.
-The Phoenix collectively shot 15-of-17 (.882) from behind the charity stripe. The percentage is the highest it has been in a single game for the Phoenix since Elon faced UNCW on Jan. 12 (.952).
-Elon outrebounded the Tribe 34-32.
